The books of the Bible can be a daunting task to read through, especially in order. I don’t know about you, but I have all too many times come up with the new year’s resolution of reading the Bible and found my way halfway through Leviticus, lamenting at the task.
As Kirk Bullington states in his Balanced Bible Reading Plan, “perhaps the following testimony sounds familiar:”
“I have tried to read the Bible several times. I usually start in Genesis, and I do fine through Exodus. However, I lose interest when I start reading Leviticus. I just don’t understand all those laws and sacrifices. I then try to read the New Testament; it’s more important, right? I enjoy Matthew, but by the time I get through Mark I am beginning to feel like I have read this story before. When I get to Luke, I lose interest and again stop reading.”
Scottish preacher Robert Murray M‘Cheyne came up with a bible reading plan back in 1842, which is still popular to this day. In his writings, he describes some “dangers” in attempting to read the bible straight though. I feel that his insights on the matter are still valid to this day.
“DANGERS.
(1.) Formality. – We are such weak creatures that any regularly returning duty is apt to degenerate into a lifeless form. The tendency of reading the Word by a fixed rule may, in some minds, be to create this skeleton religion. This is to be the peculiar sin of the last days – “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” Guard against this. Let the calendar perish rather than this rust eat up your souls.
(2.) Self-righteousness. – Some, when they have devoted their set time to reading of the Word, and accomplished their prescribed portion, may be tempted to look at themselves with self-complacency. Many, I am persuaded, are living without any Divine work on their soul – unpardoned and unsanctified, and ready to perish – who spend their appointed times in secret and family devotion. This is going to hell with a lie in their right hand.
(3.) Careless reading. – Few tremble at the Word of God. Few, in reading it, hear the voice of Jehovah, which is full of majesty. Some, by having so large a portion, may be tempted to weary of it, as Israel did of the daily manna, saying – “Our soul loatheth this light bread;” and to read it in a slight and careless manner. This would be fearfully provoking to God. Take heed lest that word be true of you – “Ye said, also, Behold what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the Lord of Hosts.”
(4.) A yoke to heavy to bear. Some may engage in reading with alacrity for a time, and afterwards feel it a burden, grievous to be borne. They may find conscience dragging them through the appointed task without any relish of the heavenly food. If this be the case with any, throw aside the fetter, and feed at liberty in the sweet garden of God. My desire is not to cast a snare upon you, but to be a helper of your joy.”
To help combat some of these “dangers”, we’ve shaken things up a bit. The bible is chalk full of diverse writing styles, each with specific intent and all of it God breathed and useful. The books of the Bible can be categorized into genres as follows:
Creation/Law: Genesis Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus and Deuteronomy.
History: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1st and 2nd Samuel, 1st and 2nd Kings, 1st and 2nd Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.
Poetry: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs.
Prophecy: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
Gospels/Acts: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts.
Letters: Romans, 1st and 2nd Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, Colossians, 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, 1st and 2nd Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1st and 2nd Peter, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John, Jude, and Revelation.
What we have done is shuffled these categories of scripture and paired up passages from each of the six categories for each days reading. This way, each day you will read verses from Creation/Law, History, Poetry, Prophecy, the Gospel/Acts, and the Letters.
The order of some of these passages and books have been altered from their canonical order. For instance, Luke was moved to just before Acts, as Acts is a sequel of sorts to Luke’s first book, The Gospel of Luke. The Acts of the Apostles begins where the Gospel of Luke ends, the ascension of Jesus Christ.
Likewise, we placed Revelation in the Letters genre which allows us to order the books of Daniel and Revelation to be read at about the same time as the prophesy in both books run parallel to each other.
The book of John is read at the same time as Genesis, to emphasis the correlation John was making in his opening of his gospel.
The order of the books of wisdom/poetry was changed to sandwich Job between Psalms and Proverbs.
The result is about fifteen minutes of bible reading each day, covering the spectrum of types of biblical writings, in one annual reading plan. The time each day takes to read does vary from day to day, some days are a bit shorter, some are a bit longer. You can start the reading plan any day of the year, you can double or triple up reading each day of you have more or less time. It’s adaptable to your schedule. If you want to read the whole bible in half a year, double up the readings. Read day 1 and 2 on one day, then read day 3 and 4 the next day, and so on. If you want to read the whole bible in a month, read 12 days worth each day which is about 3 hours a reading a day. It is entirely up to you. Remember, as Robert M‘Cheyne said “Let the calendar perish”, it’s not about checking off the box of daily mindless reading. Read when you want to, be mindful and intentional. Even if it takes you years to get through it, just keep at it. Sometimes, well most times in study, its best to be slow, intentional, and thorough.
Hopefully this structure can help you get past the rut of a typical reading plan, and dive deeper into God’s word as you enjoy a soothing smoke, daily, weekly or monthly.
